What made Half Life such a great game?

I have asked that question quite a number of times over the last 8 years or so ever since I played the original Half Life. My whole life revolved around playing Half Life everyday and sharing my experiences of joy and frustration with my best friends in high school at that time. But what was it that made it such an overwhelming and enjoyable experience. I discussed the same question with one of my best friends a couple of days back who happens to be a gaming nerd just like me and finally we hit the conclusion and I thought it would be cool if I shared it with everyone else here as well. The thing that made Half Life such an amazing experience was that while playing it, I was not aware of any spoilers which would have made it impossible for me to enjoy the different "wow" moments I experienced in the game.

The first time I read about that game was in an issue of Time's magazine in my school's library with just a single screenshot of a couple of dead grunts with graffiti of "Die Freeman" on the wall written in some hapless random scientist's blood. I had no idea if the grunts were on my side or on the evil side, I had no idea if there were going to be any aliens in the game and I had no idea if the weapons were going to be as cool as they were in the game…in short I knew nothing about the experience that awaited, just that I had to pick up and play that game.

The game starts off with you in a huge science lab as a PhD in Theoretical Physics and it seemed like just another random day at the job. From the first look at the game, I thought it's going to be something like Tomb Raider where I will have to run around solving random puzzles. Instead, the game offered a completely unique experience, something which was completely alien to other games of that time. The whole scary experience of the head crabs (which reminded me of Facehuggers from the Alien movies), the anticipation of the grunts coming over and helping out the scientists (but instead they come to cover the evidence), the awesome boss battles and the outstanding weapons added to an unforgettable experience which I cherish till this day.

Oh yes, and you must be thinking, what was the conclusion that me and my friend drew after our little discussion we had about the game being so enjoyable. Well, it was that we didn't know what to expect from the game, we had read no reviews beforehand, hadn't seen no spoiler movies on You Tube and had no access to comprehensive reviews/previews from websites like Gametrailers to give us an idea what we might be seeing in that game. I think that the current trend of websites and other media which review games gives away a lot of what these games have to offer to the end users killing off pretty much all of the experience which they would have had in case they did not know what was in store for them. I think why I didn't have a similar experience of awe and amazement from Half Life 2 was that the media had exposed so much of the final game that it just didn't offer me enough surprises along the way. For the new GTA 4, Rockstar tried really hard to keep the media in the wraps before it released the game which I think kind of helped the sales of the game to a great extent in the end. I think all developers should take serious notice of this problem and websites should only display the rating of games as numbers and a small paragraph about the game itself and should just end their reviews at that point. Revealing too much about the game, the graphics and the plot only hurts the experience and doesn't help it! Feel free to comment on my opinion!

Iron Man sucks, don't waste your greens on it!

Its true! When was the last time you got to play a decent movie based videogame? Think hard! Only two good games come to my mind, Goldeneye for the N64 and Chronicles of Riddick. Apart from those two games, everything else seems to suck and the latest Iron Man game for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 is no exception. Actually, I was hoping that the PC version of the game would be much better in the graphics department, but I was wrong, after reading various reviews on the internet, I am appalled to say that the PC version seems to be some port of the PS2 version and has way worse graphics than the 360 and PS3 versions (which are not great either). Anyway, here is a video review of the game from Gametrailers.

Mirrors Edge Trailer

This is the trailer for EA Dice's latest game called Mirror's Edge shown at the SCEE Gamer's day! The game was influenced by the sport of parkour which involves using the human body to overcome all sorts of environmental obstacles to travel from point A to point B. The game also involves hand to hand combat and some weapons as well. Stealing weapons from enemies is also possible. The developers point out though that the focus of the gameplay will be more on hand to hand combat and evasion than weapon based tactics. Stay tuned for more on this one in the future.

ID Software is Hiring for Doom 4

ID Software today announced that they are hard at work at developing the next title in their flagship franchise, Doom 4. The official Id software website states that,

"DOOM is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "It's critical for id Software to have the best creative minds in-house to develop games that meet the standards synonymous with our titles."

They have also opened up for job hiring of 13 lucky individuals who will be set to work on this project which I suspect will launch at least a couple of years from now taking into account how long the previous incarnation of Doom took to develop. I may be wrong, it can even take 3 or 4 years but it remains to be seen whether or not they will be using their Tech 5 engine to develop Doom 4 or some other engine not developed yet. If that is the case, the production may take much longer than 2 years but if they use Tech 5 (most probably they will), the game should launch in a couple of years from now.

To read more about the story, you can go to the official website of Id Software at www.idsoftware.com

Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe: One word, AWESOME!!!

This is one of the coolest news I have come across in a long long time! I had pretty much lost interest in the Mortal Kombat series after Deadly Alliance as its sequels just didn't live up to the greatness of the old Mortal Kombat games! Behold! The new Mortal Kombat is coming out with a really fresh idea that is going to rock everyone's socks off for sure, they are making Sub-Zero fight against Batman...yep, you heard it, the most popular characters from the Outworld will battle it out with DC's top comic book heroes including Batman and Superman!

Gamespot has a video interview with the game's creator Ed Boon up on their site and he revealed that the game will even include mid air battles. So, for example if Sub-Zero punches Batman through a wall and on his way down, both the characters can fight in mid-air! There might also be some tweaking to the fatalities, although the details are still sketchy, Ed Boon revealed the characters will pretty much fight to the death with each other. (oh and of course there will be loads of blood and gore in the game as well) This game will be out on the PS3 and Xbox 360 this fall!

An interesting fact: The character Noob Saibot from the Mortal Kombat game was named by reversing the names of the game's creators, Boon and Tobias =)

Assasin's Creed PC Now Available

PC players will experience four brand-new exclusive types of investigation missions, providing even more ways for players to explore the various locations of the Third Crusade.

The four new investigation missions are an addition to the five original ones found in the console version; meaning, players will never have to complete the same (investigation) mission twice before moving on to assassinate their next target.

  • Rooftop Race Challenge: Upon meeting an informer, the player will have a set amount of time to reach a second informer. The reward for reaching the second informer on time will be information on the mission target.
  • Archer Stealth Assassination Challenge: The player will need to assassinate all archers, without being seen, in a certain zone to help other assassins carry out their missions.
  • Merchant Stand Destruction Challenge: An informer requires the player to break a set number of merchant stands. The merchants have ties to Altair's target and their activities must be stopped.
  • Escort Challenge: The player needs to securely escort a fellow Assassin from point A to point B.

Writer Stephen King Slams Attempt to Ban on Violent Videogames

Here is what he had to say,

"What makes me crazy is when politicians take it upon themselves to play surrogate parents. The results of that are usually disastrous.... What really makes me insane is how eager politicians are to use the pop culture as a whipping boy. It's easy for them, even sort of fun, because the pop-cult always hollers nice and loud. Also, it allows legislators to ignore the elephants in the living room."
